Baking for Heroes

2255. David Brown

David Brown, from Suffolk, started baking in 2009 with his late wife, Pat, to fundraise for veterans, after their daughter returned home from deployment in Afghanistan.

David, formerly a ship’s baker, and Pat wanted to find a way to support veterans returning from deployment, and started with a cake sale in their front garden for ‘Armed Forces Day’. David and Pat had managed to raise over £40,000 selling their baked goods, chutneys, and through holding raffles before Pat sadly passed away in 2016.

Following her death, David has continued to bake over 1,000 cakes a year in her memory. The cake sales have become a way of life for David and his regular customers, and he receives lots of support from the local community and businesses. David has now raised over £120,000 for ‘Help for Heroes’ by regularly selling his bakes in Beccles town square and at shows in Norfolk and Suffolk.

David said:

“I was taken very much by surprise about this award and am very very proud and honoured on winning the award. I am of course just carrying on what my late Wife started. If it hadn’t been for her, I would not have been here today. She would have been so proud and I know just what she would have said; ‘I only make a few cakes love, you do all the work’. So, from her and myself, a very big thank you. To me, my fundraising is just a way of life, knowing that I am helping those service personnel in need”.
