Socks For The Street

1349. Joseph Cox

Joseph Cox, aged 12, from Edinburgh, created ‘Socks For The Street’ in 2017 and has since distributed over 5,000 donated socks, 2,000 items of donated underwear, hats, gloves and sleeping bags to homeless people across Edinburgh.

10 Downing Street

Joseph initially set up the appeal for around Christmas, but following its success he was inspired to continue his campaign, providing vital additional support to those who are homeless in the city, and helping them to recover a sense of dignity through the provision of new clothes.

In a personal letter to Joseph, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“I am lost in admiration for remarkable people like you who go out and help their communities with so much time and enthusiasm. You are an inspiration to us all in how to create positive change in other people’s lives. Well done.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
