Sarcoma UK Patron

620. Richard Whitehead MBE

Richard Whitehead MBE is one of the world’s best sprinters – a world record holder in full and half marathons and current Paralympic and World Champion in the T42 200m.

He was appointed an MBE for services to athletics in the 2013 New Year Honours. But Richard also aspires to make a difference. As Sarcoma UK’s first ever patron, Richard has increased awareness of sarcoma cancer and fundraised to support the charity’s research efforts. Richard was inspired to get involved with the charity after his friend and mentor, Simon Mellows, died of sarcoma cancer.  In 2012  he ran ‘40 marathons in 40 days’ from John O’Groats to Land’s End for Sarcoma UK. Richard’s award will be presented at the Sarcoma UK reception in Downing Street.

In a personal letter to Richard, Prime Minister Theresa May said:

You have already made your country proud and have inspired millions with your incredible sporting achievements. Now as a Sarcoma UK patron you are raising awareness and funds for a tremendous charity. This important work is making a real difference to people with sarcoma cancers and their families.

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
