Craig Barker, from Staffordshire, launched a #smashthetash campaign alongside David Fairbanks, David Edwards and Amy Furnival through their community group 'Cricketers Against Covid' to raise money for NHS Charities Together.

By encouraging fellow cricket players to grow, and uniquely style their facial hair and then donate a small sum of money, they have together raised over £40,000, whilst bringing together club members at a time when playing team sports has been restricted.

In a personal letter to Craig and the team, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“Congratulations on your fantastic #smashthetash initiative which has brought together the cricketing community to have fun and fundraise.

“While the facial hair may be temporary, your impact on NHS charities will be lasting.”

Craig, David, David and Amy said:

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the spirit shown by the cricketing community and as a collective, we shone at a time of darkness. It is testament to everybody involved and we are so proud that we were able to support our heroes at the NHS who are doing such an amazing job.”
