Nishall Garala, aged 24, from Harlow, is the founder of ‘#BigupHarlow’, a campaign that has united thousands of local people to promote community cohesion and youth voice across the town.

Nishall Garala

Nishall began his social media campaign in 2014 after feeling that many people in Harlow held negative perceptions about the town, and wanted to inspire them to feel more positively about their community and appreciate where they live. Nishall is also a volunteer youth champion and anti-hate crime ambassador, bridging the gap between young people and the local police.

In a personal letter to Nishall, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“With your innovative #BigupHarlow’ campaign, you are changing people’s perceptions of Harlow, uniting your community and showcasing the best of your town. I visited Harlow last year and saw for myself the delights of your wonderful town.”

Nishall said:

“I’m so thankful to Prime Minster for this amazing recognition; it is a great privilege and honour. I would like to dedicate this award to family and friends, because without them and their support I wouldn’t be in this position I’m in right now. Achieving this award reassures me that I’m doing the right thing for our society, and further to this, it motivates me to work even harder to make a positive difference.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
