Tackling blood cancer

402. Daniel Redhead

An #IWill Ambassador who set up branch of blood cancer charity Bloodwise and raised over £75,000.

Daniel, 21, from North Lincolnshire, became involved with fundraising for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research when he lost his friend James to blood cancer aged 15. He wanted to do something to help people like James, so Daniel led a group of friends to set up the Winterton & District Branch of Bloodwise in 2011. The group set themselves an initial target of raising £50,000 and took part in a series of amazing fundraising projects including skydiving, bungee jumping.

Daniel works hard to include the whole community in their work, involving many businesses and community groups to raise the profile of blood cancer but also raise as much money as possible. The group has already exceeded their target, raising over £75,000.

Prime Minister David Cameron said:

“Daniel has shown tremendous courage in taking the experience of losing a friend to leukaemia and being inspired to raise money to tackle blood cancer. By leading a group of young people to raise over £70,000, Daniel has made a fantastic contribution to the work of Bloodwise and I delighted to recognise him as a Point of Light.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
