Ananda Guruge, representing Sri Lanka, founded the Southern Province Deaf Association (SPDA) which has supported over 1,000 people, with hearing difficulties and without, to learn sign language.
The impact of his work has enabled those with hearing impairments to communicate better with their families, creating a more integrated community in the province. More recently, Ananda has arranged vocational training with special adjustments for the students which has enabled them to gain employment in a range of industries.
Ananda said:
