Smart Kids Program Nauru

Commonwealth Point of Light 87. Corasita McKay

Corasita McKay, representing Nauru, established the ‘Smart Kids Program’ in Nauru to help improve the wellbeing of young people across the country.

Nauru has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, with 95 per cent of the population classified as overweight or obese. To combat this, Corasita organises fun and varied sports and social activities for Nauruan young people from dance lessons and basketball to lifeguard training and community beach clean ups. Corasita uses personal funds to purchase sports equipment and other items required for these activities. Corasita is committed to the health and wellbeing of Nauruans, particularly children and young adults, and her programme is the only one of its kind in Nauru.

Corasita said

“I love what I do, it’s who I am and I’ve always tried to made sure that all kids in Nauru are welcome to join.  I believe what I do makes a difference in these kids lives, teaching them about sportsmanship, to be respectful and have discipline so they will become good Nauruan citizens.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
