Maggie’s Newcastle

806. Matt Hadden

Matt Hadden, from Newcastle, took part in last month’s ‘Great North Run’ to fundraise for the charity that has provided him with valuable support during his recent diagnosis with terminal bone cancer.

‘Maggie’s Newcastle’ is a centre based in the local Freeman Hospital that offers advice and support for those going through cancer.  Matt, aged 28, tackled the 13.1 mile course in 4 hours and 48 minutes with his prosthetic leg. Although he was the last to cross the finish line, organisers of the ‘Great North Run’ have said that his strength in the face of adversity means he is the real winner of the race. Sir Mo Farah surprised Matt before the race by visiting him at ‘Maggie’s Newcastle’ to wish him luck on his inspiring challenge.

In a personal letter to Matt, Prime Minister Theresa May said:

“Your achievement of finishing the ‘Great North Run’ for ‘Maggie’s Newcastle’ despite very challenging personal circumstances is truly unique. You have inspired us all and have shone a light on the vital support that this charity is providing to you and others with cancer.”
