Gabriel set up the initiative with the aim of helping people, particularly from lower socio-economic backgrounds, improve cleanliness in their communities. He works particularly closely with young people in the district and also provides support for people with HIV/AIDs or those struggling with alcohol or substance abuse.

Gabriel said:

“This is a massive and pleasant surprise! I am ecstatic at this recognition from Her Majesty the Queen.

“Though presented to me, I dedicate this recognition to the residents of Kabwata township of Lusaka, Zambia who have selflessly united to own community initiatives. Through the ‘Kabwata Legends’, the community appreciates that sustainable development requires beneficiary involvement. Together, Kabwata residents are providing socio-economic support to the more vulnerable members of their community. Among challenges mitigated are cross-cutting ones such as HIV/AIDS, alcohol/substance abuse and inequities (gender, education). This recognition will reinvigorate the ‘Kabwata Legends’ to do more for humanity.

“I reiterate my gratitude to Her Majesty the Queen for the recognition, and for the Point of Light Awards initiative!”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
