Hosties 4 Heroes

750. Sophy Mahon

Sophy Mahon has been named the 750th Point of Light for her work as the founder of ‘Hosties 4 Heroes’, a group of 70 air hostesses who fundraise and provide moral support for army veterans.

Sophy has worked in her spare time to arrange fundraising events, including wing-walking and skydiving, for her airline colleagues, which have raised over £44,000 for Help for Heroes. They also volunteer at military events, where they talk to the veterans and try to make them feel valued  with their smiles and dedication. Last year, some of the ‘hosties’ were chosen to accompany Team GB’s athletes to the Invictus Games.

In a personal letter to Sophy, Prime Minister Theresa May said:

“Hosties 4 Heroes is doing unique work to support veterans and make them feel valued. You should feel proud of the variety of fundraising efforts you have led to support the worthy Help for Heroes cause, as well as the many hours you have spent volunteering to support wider veterans events.”

Sophy said:

This is incredibly unexpected and surreal. Receiving this award has only inspired myself and my team further to continue motivating airline crew to get involved to fundraise and volunteer. Thank you so much for this opportunity to raise awareness of Hosties 4 Heroes’ fun and unique style of ongoing, unfaltering, dedicated support of our heroes.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
