Discimus Foundation

2157. Gabrielle Wong

Gabrielle Wong, aged 17, a student in High Wycombe, set up ‘Discimus Foundation’ in 2021 to provide computer equipment, computer and coding lessons to children worldwide, particularly in rural communities.

In 2019, having seen the reports of damage caused to rural Cambodia by heavy flooding, Gabrielle was inspired to travel there on a volunteer mission to paint and rebuild houses. During that visit, Gabrielle had the opportunity to visit local schools where children had no access to computers or computer education. Gabrielle decided to raise money to purchase computers for a charity centre in the village and established the ‘Tech for Changes’ Academy Program in September 2021, which has evolved into ‘Discimus Foundation’.

The organisation focuses on teaching computer and coding skills for students ranging from ages 10 to 18. The Foundation works with 6 charity partners that help provide teachers and volunteers who have now delivered over 800 lessons to 9,000 student participants in countries including Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia and Sierra Leone. The Foundation also runs ‘Project Agro’, helping widows in Africa to plant cassava, a staple food for the families, to give them a source of income and enable their children to stay in education.

Gabrielle said:

“I am truly honoured to receive this Point of Light award. The award is also a recognition for all the volunteer teachers of Discimus Foundation, who have been instrumental in our success. I hope that Discimus Foundation inspires more youth to launch initiatives on causes they are passionate about.”
