Coastline Guardians

1935. Geraint John

Geraint John, from Bridgend, is embarking on a 700-mile clean-up of the Welsh coastline, single-handedly clearing tons of litter from beaches and inspiring others to join him in tackling plastic pollution.

Geraint was inspired to take on the challenge after witnessing huge amounts of beach litter whilst undertaking a five-month cycle around the UK last year raising money for charity. He is also fundraising through this challenge to buy a boat which will enable him to visit more inaccessible coastal areas at risk from plastic pollution.

Geraint’s award coincides with World Oceans Day, the annual international awareness day for protecting marine environments.

Geraint said:

“I don’t really think that I’m doing anything special, as maintaining a healthy ocean environment is critical, and also, everybody’s responsibility.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
