Burtonwood Sewing Group

778. Anne Carr

Anne Carr, from Burtonwood, has set up and expanded a local sewing club.

Determined to rekindle the village community spirit she remembered from her youth, in 2012 Anne set up a sewing group which now has 70 members. Anne provides classes and workshops for local people and has fundraised for the group to include its own sewing room, providing a welcoming space for local people to practice their hobby. Anne has raised over £25,000 to expand the group and has inspired younger people to join so she can pass her beloved hobby onto the next generation.

In a personal letter to Anne, Prime Minister Theresa May said:

“Your volunteering and fundraising for the Burtonwood Sewing Group has rekindled the spirit of the community and has inspired dozens to get involved with sewing. You should be very proud of what you have achieved in bringing together this group and, in turn, combatting social isolation in your local area.”

Helen Jones, Member of Parliament for Warrington North, said:

“I am delighted that Anne is to receive a Points of Light Award. The Sewing Group not only acts as a focus for those who enjoy this hobby, but it is inspiring new sewers as well as providing an excellent way to tackle social isolation and engender community spirit in Burtonwood village.”

Anne said:

“Burtonwood Sewing Group started off on a whim and once it got going we couldn’t stop it. It’s been hard work but it’s also been a pleasure to get us where we are today.  I’ve been extremely lucky to be able to dedicate so much time to this project and the rewards have been immeasurable.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
