Mathieu Dacruz, representing Mauritius, aged 18, is a student and President of ‘The National Forum of Colleges’, the largest network of secondary schools in the country which provides a space for 119 delegates from 17 schools to come together, make their voices heard, and find solutions to problems they are facing.

Mathieu recently initiated plans for the organisation to expand internationally by creating similar platforms across the world as part of ‘The International Forum for Secondary Institutions’, with support so far received from 10 Heads of Missions and the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Mauritius.

Mathieu was presented with his award by H.E. Charlotte Pierre, British High Commissioner to Mauritius.

Mathieu said:

“It’s a huge honour! It is so rare that young people see their efforts justly rewarded and supported. For me, this distinction, I dedicate it to all young people and I say to them: Go for it, find ideas, create and take the plunge! As long as you don’t risk trying something, you never know what will come of it.

“I thank those who registered me and who believe in me. This distinction is in the name of the efforts of all of us, the young people of NAFCO, who wish to make the voice of young Mauritians heard and to advance our own projects.”

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.
